Article: Living from the Centers, Part II: The
Awakening Heart

I've
been doing an unusually large amount of traveling
over the summer for a combination of work, pleasure
and training. Flying (talk about a moving target!),
living and interacting with lots of people from
different parts of the world, different eating
regimens, varying responsibilities–you get the
picture–has magnified the question that I posed in
my last article: What Does It Mean to be Centered
and At Home in Oneself, Regardless of What is Going
on in One's Life?

Being Centered suggests that there is something around
which you center yourself. What is that?

In the last issue, I talked about the Belly (aka the
Instinctive) Center of Intelligence as a fundamental
source of being centered. Without orienting
ourselves to being present in the body, it is
impossible to have a sense of ground and our basic
relationship with ourselves is skewed. In the words
of pioneering Enneagram teacher, Russ Hudson,
developing a relationship with the body as a center
of Intelligence, is a first major step to becoming a
real human being. In teaching and coaching, this is
where we start. But it is not the only center…

Our second Center of Intelligence which is key to being
Centered is the Heart. I'm going to try and
communicate this understanding from my heart to your
heart.

I used to think that I was really open-hearted because
I had a lot of sensitivity and feelings around most
everything. I was shocked to discover that this did
not mean that I was in touch with my Heart Center.
Instead, I was reacting to life (which, by the way,
felt very normal) rather than fully letting life in.
There are many ways of reacting to life. For
example, some of us guard our hearts because we're
convinced that we will be hurt once again and will
not be able to cope. Some of us are emotionally
volatile and think we're not authentic if we don't
fully express those emotions. Most of us keep so
busy that we have no idea what our heart center
actually feels like. Some of us fear that if we show
up with our hearts, that there will be nothing
there—we fear being empty. Sometimes it just feels
as if our heart is so burdened with sadness from an
unknown source that it doesn't feel safe to
experience it. It would be too overwhelming.

These experiences all point to the recognition that the
heart is a place of great tenderness, indeed. But
these patterns keep us out of real contact with our
hearts. And having this distance from our Heart
comes at an exorbitant price. Do you recognize how
deeply your heart wants to be fully inhabited? Do
you recognize how lonely you are when you are not
residing in your own heart?

Here are two simple suggestions for expanding your
capacity to be in contact with your own heart:

  • First, come into contact with your breath and
the sensations in your body. This can take time,
but it is an important step in helping you
experience your physical ground, your solidity
and substance. It helps create a foundation of
    safety.

  • As
you continue breathing, move the focus of your
attention to your heart space. Just breathe into
it and notice what is there. Perhaps you will
feel very little; or you might feel a lot.
Whatever is there, just breathe into it with no
judgment. Do your best to stay with it, without
trying to change anything. That's what your
    heart really wants.

If you
use this practice on a regular basis, you will begin
to develop more of a conscious relationship with
your heart energy. It is only through real contact
with the Heart, with the sensations of our heart,
that we come to experience our true nature. Thomas
Merton called the Heart the "point vierge", the
place where the human and the Divine meet. It is
here in the "deep heart" that we eventually come
into contact with the mystery and the sacredness
that is hidden deep in our soul.

Just as it is vital to come into contact with the Body,
experiencing real contact with the Heart Center is
central to our transformational work. And how can we
not do this?

Another recommendation is to Relax. It's a revelation
to recognize that by relaxing tensions in the body,
you to come into contact with sensation, and by
coming into contact with the sensations in the Heart
that you begin to realize who you truly are! Be
prepared for a wonderful surprise!

I invite you to join me in upcoming programs. Each one
is oriented toward relaxing into and experiencing
more Wakefulness, Truth and Love and Connection to
yourself. I'd love to have your presence.

Blessings,

Roxanne

Instinctual Variants Workshop: Using the Enneagram
to Create Balance in your Life and Harmony in your
Relationships

September 19-21, 2008

Mercy Center,
Burlingame, California

Our instinctual nature, operating 24/7, is extremely
powerful in our decision-making processes and
priorities, lifestyle choices, and orientation to
day-to-day reality, yet is often given little
emphasis in spiritual work. The Enneagram deals
directly with this aspect of the Self through
teachings about the Three
Instincts–Self-Preservation, Sexual (Attraction),
and Social (Adaptation).

Many people find that discovering their "Instinctual
Stack" is as powerful as first discovering their
dominant Enneagram type. Indeed, it impacts
everything in our lives.

Workshop is taught by Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy and Dr.
Ronna Phifer-Ritchie, Principal of Enneagrowth

$270 per person when two or more register at the same
time.

Registration deadline: Monday, September 8, 2008!!
